7 Patch Design Mistakes That Cost You Money

Most problems with custom patches start before production, in the design. Here are the mistakes we see most often and how to avoid them.

1. Too much detail for the size. A logo that looks great on a website can turn into a blur at 3 inches. Simplify thin lines and small shapes, or go bigger.

2. Tiny text. Small lettering fills in with thread. Keep text at least a quarter inch tall on embroidered patches, or switch to woven.

3. Too many colors. Every extra color adds work and can add cost. Most designs look better with 3 to 6 colors.

4. Low-contrast colors. Dark blue on black or yellow on white disappears from a distance. Use colors that stand apart, especially for the border.

5. Gradients on an embroidered patch. Thread can’t blend smoothly like ink. If you need gradients or photos, choose dye sublimation patches.

6. Picking the wrong backing. Iron-on won’t hold up on gear that’s washed hot every week. See our backing types comparison.

7. Skipping the proof. Always approve a proof before production. Ninja Patches LLC sends a free digital proof on every order, and nothing is made until you say yes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my patch look different from my logo?

Thread and fabric can’t show the same fine detail as a screen. We adjust the design for the patch size and show you the result on a free proof.

Does a simpler design cost less?

Often, yes. Fewer colors and less fill mean fewer stitches.

What if my design has gradients?

Choose dye sublimation, which prints full color and gradients.
